ICRANet Position Announcement: Professor in Relativistic Astrophysics

Position Summary:

ICRANet invites applications for a full-time, four-year renewable position as Professor in Relativistic Astrophysics. The selected candidate will be expected to carry out research and educational activities in ICRANet, particularly focusing on observational studies of astronomical transients, such as Black Holes, Novae, Supernovae (core-collapse and thermonuclear), Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), within the framework of Einstein theory of general relativity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research in areas related to transient phenomena in astrophysics;
  • Maintain collaborations with national and international research institutions,
  • including the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the European Space Agency (ESA), the European Southern Observatory (ESO), the National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA);
  • Deliver high-level teaching in PhD and post-doctoral programs, fostering the growth of the next generation of scientists;
  • Engage in administrative tasks related to ICRANet's scientific activities, and contribute to the continuous development of the research programs;
  • Actively participate in the supervision of PhD students, with a focus on nurturing diversity in the academic environment;
  • Assume leadership roles within ICRANet and provide strategic direction for its research programs.
Qualifications:
  • A PhD in Physics, in Astronomy or in Astrophysics;
  • robust and outstanding research record in observational astrophysics, particularly in the study of transients such as Black Holes, Novae, Supernovae, GRBs, and kilonovae;
  • Demonstrated excellence in academic teaching, including experience in the development and delivery of PhD-level and post-doc courses;
  • Proven managerial skills, having held leadership positions in scientific institutions;
  • Fluency in English is required; basic knowledge of Spanish/French/German is desirable, given the collaboration with international partners;
  • Commitment to the principles of diversity and inclusion in both research and teaching environments;
  • The candidate must demonstrate proven experience in communicating scientific results to a broader audience, with the goal of making astrophysical discoveries and advancements more accessible to the public, and promoting a broader understanding of science through outreach and science communication activities.
Additional Information:

Since its establishment, ICRANet has fostered the education of over 120 PhD students from 15 countries, contributing significantly to the advancement of astrophysics on a global scale. In particular, ICRANet has made groundbreaking contributions to the theory of Gamma-Ray Burst, their connection with Supernovae, and the physics of collapsed objects such as neutron stars and black holes. The selected candidate will play a key role in continuing this tradition of academic excellence, while also providing managerial oversight to ensure the continued success of these and other related research programs.
